All horses require essential fatty acids which they are unable to synthesize themselves. These polyunsaturated acids have several functions. In joints essential fatty acids contribute to the integrity of the synovial membrane surrounding the joint. The use of cod liver oil has long been established and its effects are well documented. Cod liver oil is rich in vitamins A and D. Vitamin A is known to be involved in skin health and, again, in membrane integrity. Unfortunately, vitamin A is quickly destroyed in the conventrated feeds and hence can be deficient in the working horse. A deficiency in vitamin D has been noted where incidence of increased joint breakdown has occurred. The stabled horse is often deficient in vitamin D as it requires up to twenty minutes of bright sunshine a day to synthesize adequate amounds.
